Hand numbness: checking the neck, elbow and wrist, and Korean medicine treatment
Hand numbness: checking the neck, elbow and wrist, and Korean medicine treatment
Hand numbness can arise from nerve irritation at the wrist, elbow or neck. The affected fingers, positions that worsen symptoms, sensation and strength help guide assessment and treatment.
What do symptoms at the wrist and elbow look like?
Numbness mainly in the thumb, index and middle fingers, especially at night, can be a clue to carpal tunnel syndrome. Pressure on the median nerve at the wrist can cause numbness and altered sensation; driving or holding a phone may aggravate symptoms.
Numbness in the little finger and the little-finger side of the ring finger can suggest irritation of the ulnar nerve. Check whether bending the elbow or leaning on it makes symptoms worse. Finger distribution alone does not establish a diagnosis: sensation, strength and joint movement are assessed together.

How is numbness related to the neck assessed?
Irritation of a cervical nerve root can cause pain and numbness extending through the shoulder and arm into the hand, with changes in sensation or strength. The assessment checks whether neck position changes arm symptoms.
The neck, elbow and wrist are examined together. Nerve conduction studies or imaging may be arranged when needed. Note which fingers are affected, when numbness occurs and whether strength has changed.
03
Reducing strain during daily activities
Adjust the keyboard and mouse to avoid keeping the wrist excessively bent. Reduce prolonged elbow pressure or bending, and change position and take breaks during work.
A night wrist splint may be considered for diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome. Avoid forceful neck twisting or stretching that provokes numbness. Self-care and exercises are selected according to the examination.

Acupuncture trials for carpal tunnel syndrome
In a randomized trial of 77 patients, symptom scores improved in both the group receiving eight acupuncture sessions over four weeks and the oral steroid group. The acupuncture group showed greater improvement in night waking and some nerve conduction measures.
Another randomized trial assigned 60 patients to acupuncture or medication; both groups used night wrist braces. Among the 49 who completed the study, the group receiving 12 acupuncture sessions over four weeks had greater improvement in scores assessing pain, numbness, tingling and weakness. Follow-up continued for three months after treatment.
A case involving Chuna and neck–arm nerve symptoms
Neck movement, surrounding muscles and neurological findings guide whether and how Chuna is used. A 2025 case report described one patient diagnosed with both cervical radiculopathy and peripheral nerve problems in the arm, with hand swelling, arm/finger tingling and weakness. Acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna and taping were combined for eight weeks.
Scores assessing neck pain and abnormal sensation in the arm and fingers decreased from 7 to 3. Hand strength assessed by a handshake test increased from 50% to 90% of the unaffected side. This report describes the course of one patient receiving several treatments together.
Herbal prescriptions are selected after reviewing the pattern of numbness, accompanying symptoms, existing conditions and medicines. A 2015 Korean obstetrics and gynecology journal report described one patient whose carpal tunnel syndrome began in pregnancy and worsened after childbirth; acupuncture, pharmacopuncture and herbal medicine were combined.
Over approximately one week, the pain score decreased from 4 to 2. Time to symptom onset during wrist flexion increased from 10 to 26 seconds, and the response to tapping over the nerve became negative. This is a record of symptoms and examination findings after combined treatment including herbal medicine.
Namugeuneul Korean Medicine Clinic assesses discomfort in the neck, arm and wrist accompanying hand numbness and offers acupuncture, Chuna, herbal medicine and self-care guidance according to examination findings.

Weakness and sudden symptoms need assessment
If you frequently drop objects, struggle with buttons, or notice loss of hand muscle bulk, have nerve function assessed. Seek care if numbness persists or worsens.
Call 119 immediately for sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the face, arm or leg.
Slurred speech or drooping on one side of the face requires emergency assessment, even if symptoms briefly improve.
